Objective
At the end of this course students will be able to: a) describe basic concepts about the anatomy, histology and physiology of the mammary gland of dairy cows with a focus on milk production and milking systems; b) to associate the concepts of lactation physiology with applied aspects of nutrition and milk production; c) conceptualize the main components of milk and the mechanisms of its synthesis; d) define the causes, losses and control measures of bovine mastitis; (e) describe the functioning and components of milking systems for dairy cows; f) describe the physiology of dry period and relationships with mammary gland health and milk production.

Content
1) Lactation biology, anatomy and mammary gland function; Cytology and histology of the mammary gland 2) Development and hormonal control of the mammary gland (mammogenesis) 3) Neuroedocrine control of the mammary gland: control of milk secretion; lactogenic hormones; galactopoietic hormones; lactation curve 4) Effects of milking and pregnancy on lactation; milk removal; reflection of ejection, 5) Metabolism of the mammary galnd and biochemistry of milk components; Synthesis of milk components: protein, fat, lactose 6) Genetic, environmental and nutritional factors affecting milk synthesis and composition, 7) Involution of the mammary gland: histological aspects; physiology, biochemistry and endocrinology of involution, 8) How mastitis develops and main causes, 9) Damage caused by bovine mastitis; 10) Diagnosis of mastitis indicators in dairy herds and control measures, 11) Operation of milking equipment and relationship between mammary gland health, 12) Treatment of mastitis during lactation and drying
