Objective
The objectives of this course is to present a systematic study of each vitamin and emphasize their role in the nutrition of the different species of domestic animals. This study includes their action at celular and molecular levels and the metabolic processes involved, causes and effects of dietary deficiency and excess and the application of this knowledge for an efficient animal production.
Content
1. History, classification and nomenclature of vitamins; 2. Vitamin A: structure, sources, analysis, digestion, absorption, functions, requirements and supplementation, deficiency and toxicity, beta carotene; 3. Vitamin D: structure, precursors and metabolism, functions, requirements and supplementation, deficiency and toxicity; 4. Vitamin E: structure, sources, analysis, absorption, functions, requirements and supplementation, deficiency and toxicity, supra-nutritional levels; 5. Vitamin K: structure, analysis, sources, metabolism and function, requirement and supplementation, deficiency and toxicity; 6. Water-soluble vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, niacin, pyridoxine, biotin, folacin, choline, vitamin C, vitamin B12): structure, analysis, sources, metabolism, functions, requirements and supplementation, deficiency and toxicity; 7. supplementation of vitamins for animals: commercial forms, activity, premixes formulation, premixes production.
