Objective
The goal of this class is to discuss deeply and in detail, protein metabolism in ruminants, including ruminal digestion and intestinal nitrogenous compounds of the diet, the absorption of nitrogenous compounds in rumen and intestines, the post absorptive metabolism of nitrogenous compounds, the protein requirements of beef and dairy cattle, NRC and CNCPS protein systems, the balancing of amino acids in diets and the environmental impacts of excretion of nitrogen compounds to the environment.

Content
1. Overview of protein metabolism in ruminants. 2. Chemical and physical characteristics of protein. 3. Ruminal degradation of protein. 4. Microbial protein synthesis. 5. Intestinal digestion of protein. 6. Ruminal and intestinal absorption of nitrogenous compounds. 7. Post-absorptive metabolism of nitrogenous compounds. 8. Protein models - NRC beef cattle. 9. Protein models - NRC dairy cattle. 10. protein models - CNSPS. 11. protein models - BR Corte. 12. Amino acids for cattle. 13. Diet formulation.
