Objective
Address topics of evolution risk assessment and management of arthropod resistance to major control tactics used in integrated pest management programs. The course involves discussion and detailed analysis of the scientific literature in the areas of arthropod resistance to pesticides, host host plant resistance to arthropods, genetically modified plants, biological control agents, autocidal control, behavioral control and cultural control.
Content
I. General considerations. Definition of terms. Impact of the evolution of arthropod resistance to control tactics for IPM programs; II. Review of "Genetics and Evolution"; III. Review of "Insecticide Toxicology"; IV. Detection and monitoring of arthropod resistance to pesticides. Types of bioassays. Mathematical analysis of toxicological data; V. Mechanisms of arthropod resistance to pesticides; VI. Factors affecting the evolution of resistance; VII. Resistance management strategies. Discussion of the main pest resistance management programs for pesticides; VIII. Arthropod resistance to host plant resistance; IX. Arthropod resistance to biological control agents; X. Arthropod resistance to microbial control agents; XI. Arthropod resistance to behavioral control; XII. Arthropod resistance to autocidal control; XIII. Arthropod resistance to cultural control; XIV. Difficulties and challenges to implement insect resistance management (IRM) strategies.
