Objective
Offer up-to-date information regarding the biology and management of weeds, as well as the
interference onto cultivated plants. Discuss the different methods for weed control which are adopted as
a means to achieve integrated weed management in agroecosystems. Evaluate the usage of chemical
weed control via the acquisition of knowledge in areas such as herbicide mode of action, environmental
impact and effect of selection of herbicide-resistant biotypes. To discuss the usage of transgenic crops
displaying tolerance to herbicides. At last, to utilize integrated weed management approaches in
different crops and other areas of interest.
Content
Weed biology. Weed competition for water, light and nutrients. Methods for weed control. Biological
control of weeds. Absorption and translocation of herbicides. Herbicide selectivity. Herbicide fate in soils.
Main herbicide chemical groups: modes of action, absorption, residues and agricultural usage. Herbicide
resistance. Genetically-modified crops displaying tolerance to herbicides. Application technology.
