Objective
Provide students with contact with the basics of toxicology and impacts on the environment. Notions of ecotoxicology and the main tests available for the assessment of toxicity and environmental risk. Develop autonomous and critical thinking in scholars about issues involving toxic agents, impacts on the environment and their different trophic levels and analysis of data on possible toxic effects of environmental contaminants, including regulations from national and international control bodies.

Content
Introduction to environmental toxicology and its basic concepts. Chemical characteristics of the toxic agent, its physicochemical properties, and correlations with toxicity and persistence in the environment. Abiotic and biotic transformations, transport and environmental fate. Bioaccumulation and biomagnification, and characterization of ecotoxicology and tests used for toxicological evaluation.

Topics:
1. Introduction, history and concepts in basic toxicology
2. Environmental contaminants and chemical agents in the environment: physicochemical characteristics, bioavailability and transformations.
3. Contaminants, environmental fate, potentiation, synergistic and antagonistic effects, impacts on aquatic systems; sources of pollution and exposure routes; factors influencing toxicity (environmental and biotic)
4. Ecotoxicological assessment: toxicity tests with aquatic organisms, soil and sediment
5. Biomonitoring, bioindicators and biomarkers - Choice, definition and interpretation in ecotoxicological tests.
6. Cultivation and maintenance of laboratory bodies and ethics committees
7. Ecotoxicological tests and notions of statistics for interpretation of results and preparation of reports.
