Objective
The objective of this course is to provide students with information and training on the technologies used for the development and improvement of cultivars of plant species of agricultural and economic importance. Also, topics related to the collection and maintenance of germplasm banks, and genetic erosion and vulnerability associated with breeding programs are addressed.

Content
Importance, Germplasm Bank: Collection and maintenance. Components of phenotypic variation, heritability coefficient and response to selection. Heterosis and depression by endogamy. Modes of reproduction and hybridization techniques. Genetic structure of autogamous species. Breeding Methods of Self-pollinated plants: Pedigree, Bulk, Single Seed Descent, and its modifications, backcrossing and hybrid use. Genetic structure of allogamous species. Breeding of Cross-pollinated plants: Recurrent selection, hybrids, breeding varieties, and lineages. Improvement of Asexually propagated plants. Use of mutations, double haploids, and polyploidy in plant breeding. Transgenic and Biosafety. Molecular markers. Genomic selection. Genetic mapping. Population formation, increase of genetic variability in order to reduce genetic erosion and risk of the genetic vulnerability of cultivars. Participatory plant breeding. Genotype-environment interaction and stability of cultivars. Registration and release of cultivars.
