Objective
Train students for the identification of vascular plants, including all life forms, based on field collections, specimen preparation, identification of botanical material (using different techniques) and validation of taxonomic nomenclature aiming at the production of floristic inventories (i.e. lists of species) and the characterization of the main physiognomic and successional plant formations. The course also provides context on alternative techniques for species identification, involving images, DNA and spectroscopy.

Content
Concepts of plant morphology and systematics. Collecting botanical material in the field. Identification of plant families, genera and species of various life forms. Field recognition and characterization of vegetation formations. Construction and use of analytical keys for plant determination. Automated validation tools of nomenclature using different taxonomic backbones. Notions of identification using alternative approaches, such as identification via images, DNA sequences and spectroscopy.
