PITOMBA-DO-PARANÁ
Arbusto da família Myrtaceae, da espécie Eugenia retusa Arech. (Phyllocalyx retusas Berg.).
Nota 1 e 2: Ele é sul-americano e tem sua distribuição geográfica do Paraná e Santa Catarina até o Uruguai, passando pelo Rio Grande do Sul. É comum nas matas campestres da zona rural de Porto Alegre. É planta delgada, de 1-2 m de altura, umbrófila, desenvolvendo-se frequentemente nos terrenos úmidos de baixadas e vertentes d’água, em capões e touceiras, mas é muito ornamental. Folhas obovadas, oblongo-espatuladas, pecioladas e opostas, nervuras paralelas, mais salientes na face ventral; flores brancas, solitárias, 4 pétalas brancas, 4 sépalas oblongo-lanceoladas. Fruto baga piriforme, axilar, medindo 1,5-2,5 cm de comprimento, casca alaranjada, com maturação em fevereiro. Polpa também alaranjada, pouco doce e pouco sucosa, que lembra a cereja europeia.

Note 1 and 2: It is from South America and it has its geographical distribution from Paraná and Santa Catarina states to Uruguay, passing by Rio Grande do Sul state. It is common in the countryside woodlands of rural zone of Porto Alegre city. It is a slender plant, with 1-2 m high, ombrophylous, developing often in humid grounds of lowlands and slopes of water, in woodlands and clumps, but it is very ornamental. Its leaves are obovate, oblong-spatulate, petiolate and opposite ones, with parallel ribs but salient ones in the ventral side, white and solitary flowers, 4 white petals, 4 oblong-lanceolate sepals. Pear-shaped berry fruit, axillary one, with 1.5-2.5 cm long, orangish peel, ripening in February. Its pulp is also orangish, little sweet and juicy that reminds the European cherry.
