PLÁTANO
Árvore da família Plantanaceae, da espécie Platanus occidentalis L.
Nota 1 e 2: Ela alcança grande desenvolvimento em diâmetro nos EUA. Encontradiça em solos úmidos do leste norte-americano e no sul de Ontário, Canadá. No Brasil, é comum nas ruas e avenidas de São Paulo e em Campos do Jordão, onde se naturalizou. Ramos com a casca esbranquiçada, fina e lisa. Fuste com a epiderme ostentando largas escamas também lisas, e acinzentadas. Com porções amarronzadas, verdes e acinzentadas. Folha com a forma de um coração, cujo comprimento e largura atingem 10 a 20 cm, 3 a 5 lóbulos pontiagudos grosseiramente dentados, com 3 nervuras principais na base, de coloração verde-brilhante e lisa na página superior, pálida e levemente pubescente na inferior. Fruto semelhante a uma bola com mais de 2,0 cm de diâmetro. Fornece madeira para móveis, caixotaria, engradados, dormentes, mourões de cerca, lenha.

Note 1 and 2: It reaches up a big development in diameter in the USA. It is found in humid soils of the North American East and in the South of Ontario, Canada. It is common on the streets and avenues of São Paulo and in the city of Campos do Jordão, where it is naturalized. Its branches have a whitish color, smooth bark and are thick. Its stems have an epidermis showing off wide scales, also smooth, and grayish, with brownish, green and grayish portions. Its leaves are in a heart shape whose length and width reach up 10 to 20 cm, 3 to 5edged grossly toothed lobes, with 3 main ribs in the base, of bright green color and smooth in the upper page, pale and slightly pubescent in the lower one. Its fruits are similar to a ball with more than 2.0 cm of diameter. It provides wood for furniture, boxes, crates, railway ties, wooden fence posts, and firewood.
