MAÇÃ-BRAVA
Fruto do arbusto da família Rhamnaceae, da espécie Zizyphus mauritiana Lamk (Z. insularis Smith; Z. jujuba (L.) Lamk.).
Nota 1 e 2: Originária da África tropical, muito provavelmente ali introduzida por mercadores árabes, difundida também pelas regiões áridas e semiáridas do Oeste, na bacia do Tchad, na África Oriental, da Núbia ao Moçambique. Fruto vermelho-escuro, arredondado ou ovalado, de 4 a 5 cm de diâmetro, com uma polpa brancacenta, doce, e o endocarpo duro, quebradiço, com duas sementes. Sua maturação acontece em dezembro. O arbusto tem ramos finos; folhas alternas, trinérveas, mais ou menos elípticas, tendo a face superior verde e a inferior revestida por um compacto tomento esbranquiçado, bordos levemente denticulados; na junção dos pecíolos com os ramos, encontram-se, às vezes, pequenas estípulas transformadas em espinhos.

Note 1 and 2: It is originated from tropical Africa, most likely introduced there by Arab traders, also disseminated around the arid and semi-arid regions of West, in the watershed of Tchad, in Oriental Africa, from Nubia to Mozambique. Its fruit is dark red, round or oval, with 4 to 5 of diameter, with a whitish and pulp, hard and brittle endocarp, with two seeds. Ripening in December. It is a shrub with thin branches. Alternate and trinerve leaves, kind of elliptical, with a green upper side, and a lower side covered by a compact whitish tomento, edges slightly denticulate; in the junction of the petioles with the branches, there are, sometimes, small stipules transformed in thorns.
