MAIETA-DAS-GUIANAS
Arbusto da família Melastomataceae, da espécie Maieta guianensis Aubl. (Maieta dispar Aubl.; M. hypophysca DC.; Majeta dispar Miq.; Melastoma guianensis Poir.; M. hypophysiscon Schrank & Mart.; M. maieta Desr.; Tococa mayeta Don.).
Nota 1 e 2: É nativa da vegetação ciliar dos cursos d’água, como sub-bosque, das regiões baixas e úmidas das Guianas e da Amazônia. Possui 0,50-1,00 m de altura, todo peludo, eriçado e muito ramificado. Folhas opostas, simples, obovado-oblongas; flores hermafroditas, cálice tubular; sépalas obtusas, pétalas brancas, obovais. Fruto baga globosa, ou um tanto oblonga, recoberto pelas sépalas, de coloração, a princípio, vermelho-sangue, enegrecido com o avanço da maturação; polpa sucosa, adocicada; come-se crua, contendo numerosas sementinhas pretas.

Note 1 and 2: It is from the riparian vegetation of the waterways, like an understory, of the low and humid areas of the Guianas and Amazonia. It has 0.50-1.00 m high, completely hairy, rough and very branched. Opposite, simple, obovate oblong leaves; hermaphrodite flowers, tubular calyx; obtuse sepals; obovate, white petals. Rounded berry fruit, or a little oblong; covered by sepals, initially of blood red color, blackened with the progress of ripening; juicy, sweetened pulp; it is eaten raw, with numerous of small black seeds.
