Gênero de plantas da família Gnetaceae, com mais de 30 espécies, sendo as mais importantes: 1) Ephedra americana Humb. & Bonpl., (Ephedra adrina Poepp.), 2) Ephedra ochrata Miers. e 3) Ephedra triandra Tul.
Nota 1 e 2: Elas são típicas do sul da Europa, norte da África e América tropical. Elas têm ramos verde-pálidos, destituídos de folhas, assemelham-se ao rabo de cavalo.

Note 1 and 2: They are typical of the south of Europe, north of Africa and tropical America. They have pale green branches without leaves, resembling the tale of a horse.
