Família de plantas sendo as espécies mais notáveis como: 1) Gladiolos hortulanus Hort. (palma, plama-de-santa-rita) e 2) Iris germanica L. (íris, íris-barbado, flor-de-lis).
Nota 1 e 2: Elas encontram-se amplamente distribuídas no mundo, porém no Brasil, poucas espécies são conhecidas. Elas são herbáceas, acaules, com rizomas subterrâneos. As folhas são lineares, lanceoladas, de nervação paralela. As flores são isoladas, hermafroditas, vistosas, de cores e formas variadas.

Note 1 and 2: They occur widely around the world, but few species are known in Brazil. They are herbaceous, with subterraneous rhizomes. The leaves are linear, lanceolate of parallel nerves. The flowers are isolated, hermaphrodite, and lively of different colors and shapes.
