MANDACARU-FACHEIRO
Planta da família Cactaceae, da espécie Cereus jamacaru DC. (Cactus jamacaru Kostel; Piptanthocereus jamacaru Riccob).
Nota 1 e 2: Espécie brasileira, agigantada, das áreas secas do Nordeste, xerófita, arborescente; tronco robusto, ramificado desde a base, de 3-5 m de altura e 20 cm de diâmetro. Ramos articulados, recobertos na extremidade por lã branca, da qual sobressaem espinhos retos; aréolas espaçadas de 3-4 cm, providas de feltro pardo, curto, 5-7 espinhos radiais e 2-4 centrais mais longas. Flores que se abrem à noite, 25-30 cm de comprimento e 18-20 cm de diâmetro, afuniladas, portanto. Fruto baga ovóide, 5-8 cm de comprimento, vermelho-carregado; polpa alva, saborosa, doce e comestível que alguns julgam comparável à do figo. Suas sementes são pequenas e pretas, brilhantes.

Note 1 and 2: A Brazilian species, gigantic, of dry areas of the Northeast, xerophyte, arborescent; strong trunk, branched since the base, of 3-5 m high and 20 cm of diameter. Articulate branches, recovered on the extremity by white wool from which straight thorns stand out; spaced areola of 3-4 cm, with grown felt, short, 5-7 radial thorns and 2-4 longer central ones. Flowers that open at nights, 25-30 cm long and 18-20 cm of diameter, therefore, tapered. Ovoid berry fruit, 5-8 cm long, dark red; sweet tasty and edible white pulp, compared to a fig one. Its seeds are small, black, and bright.
