MURTINHA
Denominação vulgar para três espécies diferentes da família Myrtaceae, do gênero Eugenia: 1) E. arenaria St. Hil., 2) E. insipida St. Hil., e 3) E. ovatifolia St. Hil.
Nota 1 e 2: A espécie 1) E. arenaria St. Hil. é um arbusto nativo do Rio de Janeiro, notadamente do litoral do Cabo Frio, de tronco liso; folhas opostas, ovais; flores que desabrocham em setembro, pequenas, brancas, 4 pétalas; fruto globuloso, liso, de poucas sementes, com as sépalas que persistem no fruto maduro. A espécie 2) E. insipida St. Hil. também é do Rio de Janeiro, de tronco liso; folhas opostas, elípticas, lisas; flores solitárias ou geminadas; fruto ovóide, também coroado pelas sépalas após maduro, vermelho, comestível, acídulo, com uma semente, amadurecendo no final do ano. No Ceará, tem a alcunha de murta. A espécie 3) E. ovatifolia St. Hil., também nativo do Rio de Janeiro, é arbusto semelhante às espécies precedentes; folhas ovais, opostas e lisas; flores pequenas, brancas, 4 pétalas. Frutinho oval, também coroado pelos restos do cálice, vermelho, com um caroço no centro. Há outras espécies relacionadas ao gênero Eugenia: E. candolleana DC., E. aureata Berg., e E. candolleana (Myrtus nitida Vell.).

Note 1 and 2: The species 1) E. arenaria St. Hil. is a shrub native of Rio de Janeiro state, notably on the coast of Cabo Frio, of smooth trunk; opposite and oval leaves; flowers that blossom in September, small, white, 4 petals; globose, smooth fruit, with few seeds, and sepals that persist one the ripe fruit. The species 2) E. insipida St. Hil. is also from Rio de Janeiro state, of smooth trunk; opposite, elliptical, smooth leaves; solitary or twin flowers; ovoid fruit, also crowned by the sepals after ripe, red, eatable, acidic, with one seed, ripening in the end of year. In Ceará state, it has the alias murta. The species 3) E. ovatifolia St. Hil., also native of Rio de Janeiro state, is a shrub similar to the previous species; oval, opposite and smooth leaves; small and white flowers, 4 petals. Oval small fruit, red, also crowned by the rests of the calyx, with one pit in the center. The other species related to the genus Eugenia: E. candolleana DC., E. aureate Berg., and E. candolleana (Myrtus nitida Vell.).
