SÃO-JOÃO
Arbusto da família Berberidaceae, da espécie Berberis laurina Thunb. (Berberis glaucescens St. Hill.).
Nota 1 e 2: Ele é nativo das serras de Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul, expandindo-se para o Uruguai e Argentina. Ele pode atingir de 1,50-2,50 m de altura, os espinhos são folhas simples modificadas em número de 3 e se inserem na base do ramalhete. As inflorescências em racemos com flores pequenas, amareladas, de uma bráctea lanceolada de 2,5-3,0 mm, que fecundam em profusão, dando origem a frutinhos violetas na maturação. De polpa púrpura, pouco fundente, de baixo aroma, sucosa e doce.

Note 1 and 2: It is native of the hills of the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, spreading to Uruguay and Argentina. It can reach from 1.5-2.5 m of height, with thorns that are simple modified leaves in number of 3 inserted at the branch base. Its inflorescences in racemes with small yellow flowers of lanceolate bracts of 2.5-3.0 mm, which fecund in profusion giving origin to little fruits, purple at maturation. They have a purple pulp, which is a little creamy, low aroma, juicy and sweet.
