CANA-DE-MACACO
Planta herbácea da família Zingiberaceae, da espécie Costus spiralis Roscoe.
Nota 1 e 2: Ela é brasileira e perene. É uma erva ereta, com grandes folhas dispostas em espiral ou alternas; colmo cheio, nodoso e piloso. O fruto é uma cápsula deiscente, trivalvar, que encerra sementes angulosas ou globosas. Tanto Costus spiralis como sua congênere C. spicatus possuem aplicações medicinais. Usa-se as folhas frescas e hastes novas para o preparo de chás, tinturas e cataplasmas, usados como diurético, emenagogo, no tratamento de tosses, nefrites e tumores. Há espécies do mesmo gênero como C. pisonis que são diuréticas e febrífugas, usadas no combate a catarros e afecções na bexiga e nos rins; e nas infecções de hérnia.
An herbaceous plant of the family Zingiberaceae, of the species Costus spiralis Roscoe.
Note 1 and 2: It is Brazilian and perennial. It is an erect herb, with large leaves disposed in a spiral or alternate, with a filled, knotty and pilous stalk. The fruit is a dehiscent and trivalvar capsule, which shelters angular and rounded seeds. Costus spiralis and Costus spicatus (both belong to the genus Costus) have medicinal applications. The fresh leaves and the young stems are used in teas, in dyeing activities and in poultices, in order to work as diuretic and emenagogue and in the treatment of coughs, nephritis and tumors. There are species of the same genus (Costus) that, aside from diuretic, are also antifebrile and used to fight catarrh, urinary bladder problems and renal and hernia diseases.
