Planta daninha perene, da família Polygonaceae, da espécie Polygonum hydropiperoides.
Nota 1 e 2: De mediana freqüência em brejos, infestando principalmente beira de canais e lagoas, baixadas úmidas em pastagens, lavouras de arroz inundadas e terrenos baldios. Herbácea, glabra, decumbente, com enraizamento nos nós. Reputada como medicinal, sendo adstringente, antidisentérica, diurética, vermicida e anti-hemorroidal, e particularmente útil contra úlceras, erisipela, artritismo e diarréias sangüíneas.

Note 1 and 2: It has a median occurance in marshes infesting the banks of channels and ponds, humid lowland pastures, flooded rice crops and uncultivated lands. It is herbaceous, glabrous, decumbent, with knots in the roots. It is known as medicinal having adstringent, antidiarrheal, diuretic, vermifuge and antihemorrhoidal properties. It is also used against ulcers, erysipelas, artritis and blood diarrheas. Vulgarization: lakeweed, smartweed.
