De folhas grandes numerosas, alternas, de 5-7 lóbulos profundamente recortados, flores em espiga erminal, azul violáceas e fruto cápsula deiscente. Planta venenosa usada nos tempos históricos para preparar terríveis filtros e envenar lanças e flechas, além de iscas para matar lobos. Reputada como medicinal, sendo considerado narcótico, analgésico e sedativo e empregado em forma de infusão das folhas e raízes ou como extrato, pó ou tintura.
