Nota 1 e 2: Ela ocorre desde Minas Gerais e Rio de Janeiro até o Rio Grande do Sul e Argentina; Ela é grande, de até 25 m de altura e 80 cm de diâmetro; A sua casca é cinzento-pardacenta, de 2 cm de espessura, resinosa, um pouco rugosa e profundamente fendida; Ela fornece madeira castanha, depois castanho-avermelhada, superfície irregularmente lustrosa e algo áspera, que pode ser usada para construção civil e naval, pontes, estruturas externas, mancais, cabos de ferramentas, cruzetas, macetas, carroçaria, tacos, painéis, dormentes de primeira qualidade, vigas, esteios, torno; A árvore exsuda, mediante corte, o bálsamo do Peru ou o bálsamo-de-tolu, líquido rubro, muito aromático, que endurece mais tarde.
