Nota 1 e 2: Ocorre do México à América Central e até a Amazônia (brasileira, colombiana etc); Ela é pequena, atingindo até 3 m aos 2 anos de idade e, mais velha e em condições propícias, pode chegar à altura de 10-12 m; O seu fruto é dos maiores de todas as espécies de Theobrom, elíptico-globoso, caracterizado por rugas anastomosadas em todos os sentidos e chega a 30 cm de comprimento x 12 de largura, amarelo e maduro, com casca lenhosa e dura; ele contém amêndoas grandes, brancas e saborosas, daí a espécie ser conhecida, em outros países latino-americanos por cacau-branco; A sua polpa exala doce perfume de melão maduro e dela se fazem refrescos; Os frutos maduros caem ao chão.
