ARÁCEAS
Família de vegetais herbáceos, terrestres, rupícolas, dendrícolas, quer acaules, quer com longos rizomas ou cipós e que se caracteriza, dentre as outras famílias, pelas flores dispostas em espigas com bráctea larga ou estreita envolvendo a base da inflorescência.
Nota 2: Na maioria são tóxicas, embora sejam algumas importantes plantas ornamentais (caládios, antúrios, filodendros) e poucas mais podem ser consideradas alimentares, como taiás, taiobas, mangarás e inhames, desde que devidamente cozidas, tanto as folhas, como as espádices e os rizomas, para que se volatizem as substâncias tóxicas que encerram.
A family of plants considered herbaceous, terrestrial, rupicolous, dendricolous, acaulous, with longs ryzoms or lianas. They distinguish themselves from the other families by its flowers in spikes with large or narrow bract involving the inflorescence base.
Note 2: Most of them are toxic, however some are important ornamental plants and few can be considered edible, if cooked in order to eliminate the toxic substances present in the leaves, as well as in the spadixes and ryzoms.
