Árvore da família Leguminosae-Cesalpinioidea, da espécie Tamarindus indica L. (T. occidentalis Gaertn.; T. officinalis Hook).
Nota 1 e 2: É natural das savanas mais secas da África tropical e, também do Sudoeste da Ásia. Seu fruto foi levado da Índia para todas as terras de domínio lusitano, inclusive para o Brasil. Ele pode atingir volumoso porte, altura que ultrapassa 40 m e tronco de diâmetro de mais de 1,50 m. De sua polpa se obtêm dezenas de produtos, como sorvetes, refrescos e doces. As sementes, devidamente moídas, constituem valioso pó aglutinante para uso na tecelagem geral e na fiação da juta, substituindo vantajosamente o amido.

Note 1 and 2: It is natural of the most dried savannas from Africa and from the Southeast Asia as well. Its fruits were brought by the Indians to all lands of the Lusitanian domain, including Brazil. It can reach a voluminous size, exceeding 40 m tall and its trunk measuring more than 1.50 m of diameter. Its pulp can produce many products, such as ice creams, soft drinks and candies. The seeds, properly grounded, make a valuable agglutinated powder to be used for weaving and jute webbing, making them more convenient than starch.
