Nota 1 e 2: Abunda na Colômbia, na Costa Rica, nas Guianas, no Panamá, no Peru, no Brasil e no Equador. É elegante, de estipe de uns 15 m de altura, cilíndrico, armado de fortes espinhos formando anéis regularmente espaçados. Folhas penadas com pecíolo e raque armados; flores em racemos, que saem de uma espata espinhenta; frutos globosos, ovóides ou oblongos, de aproximadamente 7 cm de largura, de ápice agudo ou obtuso, epiderme vermelha, amarela ou alaranjada, que encerra mesocarpo farinhento e carnoso com uma única semente, de 1,5 cm de diâmetro, rica em óleo industrializável. Capaz de produzir um excelente palmito (creme), bem aceito ao consumo.

It is elegant, of stipe of approximately 15 m high, cylindrical, with strong thorns shaping ring regularly spaced. Pinnate leaves with petiole and reinforced spines; flowers in racemes, that emerged from a thorny spate; globose, ovoid or oblong fruits, of approximately 7 cm wide, with acute or obtuse apex; red, yellow or orangish epiderm, which covers a floury and fleshy mesocarp with only one seed, of 1.5 cm of diameter, rich in oil possible to be industrialized. It can produce an excellent palm hearts (cream), well accepted to be consumed.
