Arbusto da família Cactaceae, da espécie Pereskia aculeata Mill. (Cactus lucidus Salisb., C. pereskia L.; Pereskia acardia Parm.; P. foetans Speg.; P. fragans Lam.; P. godseffiana Sander; P. longispina Haw.; P. pereskia Karst.; P. sacharosa Griseb.; P. undulata Lam.).
Nota 1 e 2: Ele é originário das Antilhas e do litoral do golfo do México. É inicialmente ereto, mas com ramificações trepadoras, de 3-6 m de comprimento; folhas chatas, lanceoladas, alternas, 5-8 cm de comprimento x 2,5-5 cm de largura; espinhos em cachos, curtos e recurvos; flores amarelo-pálidas, mas há variedades de rosadas. Fruto baga globosa, amarelo-limão, do tamanho de uma azeitona e que se torna liso na plena maturação, comestível. Polpa mole, sucosa, sementes redondas, pretas, luzidias.

Note 1 and 2: It is originated from the Antilles and the Gulf Coast of Mexico.It is originally erect, but with climbing branches, of 3-6 cm long; flat, lanceolate, alternate leaves; thorns in bunches, short and bent-over; pale yellow flowers, but there are varieties of rosy ones. Globose berry fruit, lemon yellow, olive-shaped and become smooth in full maturation, eatable. Soft and juicy pulp; rounded, black, and shiny seeds. Vulgarization: gooseberry pereskia, Barbados gooseberry, Barbados shrub, blade apple cactus, leafy cactus.
