MELÃO-DE-SÃO-CAETANO
Trepadeira da família Cucurbitaceae, da espécie Momordica charantia (Melothria pendula Sieb.; Momordica anti helmintica Schum. & Thorn.; M. elegans Salisb.; M. muricata Willd.; M. operculata Vell.; M. senegalensis Lam.).
Nota 1 e 2: É originária da Ásia e da África tropicais, aclimatada no Brasil todo: Nordeste, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, etc. É herbácea, anual, de caule ramoso, estriado, pubescente, tomentoso. Ela é de ramagem fina e frágil. Folhas partidas até o meio ou em mais lobadas. Gavinhas simples. Flores masculinas solitárias, amarelas e as femininas longopedunculadas; o florescimento se verifica no outono. O fruto é cápsula oblonga, carnosa, assemelha-se a um balãozinho, de 10 cm de comprimento por 4 cm de diâmetro, de coloração amarelo-avermelhada na plena maturação, que ocorre de dezembro a julho. As sementes são envolvidas por uma polpa vermelha. Tanto a polpa quanto as sementes são apreciadas pelas crianças e pelos pássaros. Além da utilização da polpa e das sementes, os frutos cozidos podem ser preparados como outros hortícolas.

Note 1 and 2: It is originated from tropical Asia and Africa, acclimatized all over Brazil: Northeast, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, etc. It is herbaceous, annual, of branched, strained, pubescent, and tomentose stem. Parted leaves until the middle or more lobate. Simple tendrils. Solitary yellow male flowers and long pedunculate female ones; the flourishing occurs in Autumn. The fruit is an oblong and fleshy capsule, little balloon shaped, of 10 cm long x 4 cm of diameter, reddish yellowin full maturation, that occurs from December to July. The seed are covered by a red pulp. The pulp as well as the seeds are appreciated by kids and birds. Besides the usage of the pulp and seeds, the cooked fruits can be prepared like other vegetables. Vulgarization: balsam pear, bitter gourd, bitter melon.
