CENTEIO
Grão da família Gramineae, do gênero Secale, da espécie Secale cereal L.
Nota 1 e 2: Ele é nativo do Turquestão, e encontrado como planta selvagem na Síria, Armênia, Irã e Afeganistão. Ele é anual, de colmos eretos, que atingem 1,0 a 1,5 m de altura, pouco perfilhados; as folhas são dotadas de bainha e lâmina, sendo esta plana, estreita, áspera e de cor verde-azulada; a inflorescência é do tipo espiga, longa e delgada, contendo uma espigueta em cada ráquila; cada espigueta é constituída de três espículas, duas férteis e uma abortiva; cada uma dessas é revestida por uma lema e uma pálea; a lema é em forma de quilha, apresentando pelos na base e terminando por uma arista; a pálea é estreita e delicada; o fruto é uma cariopse mais longa e fina que o grão de trigo; as raízes da planta ramificam-se bastante, principalmente nas proximidades da superfície do solo.

Note 1 and 2: It came from Turkestan and found as a wild plant in Syria, Armenia, Iran and Afeghnistan. It is annual, of straight stalks that reach 1-1.5 m of height and are a little affliated. The leaves have a rim and blade, which is flat, narrow, rough and blueish green color. The inflorescence is a long and slim spike which has one little spike in each axis. Each axis is composed of three spikelets where two are fertile and one is abortive. Each one of them is coated by a lema and a palea; the lema has a keel shape, showing hair on the base and an arist at the edge; the palea is narrow and delicate; the fruit is a longer and thinner caryopsis than the grain of wheat; the roots are very branchy, mainly when reaching the soil surface.
