Arbusto da família Malpighiaceae, da espécie Malpighia coccifera L. (M. aquifolia L., M. coccigrya L).
Nota 1 e 2: Ele é originário da América do Sul e cultivado como ornamental por toda a América tropical. Ele é pode alcançar até 2 m de altura, as folhas curtopecioladas, opostas, obovadas, obtusas ou arredondadas, serrato-dentado-espinhosas; as flores têm sépalas oblongas, pétalas brancas ou róseas, franjadas, dispostas em corimbos de fascículos curtopendunculados; e o fruto é drupa globosa de 9-10 mm de diâmetro, carnosa, trilocular, comestível.

Note 1 and 2: It is native of South America and cropped as ornamental all over tropical America. It can reach until 2 m of height; its leaves are short-petiolated, opposite, oblonged, obtused or round, sawed, teethed and thorny. Its flowers have oblong sepals, white or pink petals that can be fringed, diposed in corimbos of short pendunculated fascicles. Its fruit is a globous drupe of 9-10 mm of diameter, fleshy, trilocular and edible.
