Ela é herbácea, rizomatosa, perene, entouceirada de 0,5-1,1 m de altura, com numerosas hastes eretas, cilíndricas, com uma coroa de folhas verde-brilhantes, lineares e reclinadas. Inflorescências no centro da coroa, com flores numerosas, marrom-claras. É apropriada para o plantio em lugares muito úmidos ou brejosos, como nas margens de tanques e lagos, em grupos, renques ou isoladamente. Multiplica-se por divisão de touceira ou sementes.
