Nota 1 e 2: Ele é originário da Índia e base alimentar humana em algumas regiões da África e Ásia. Ele é anual, perene, herbáceo, de altura variável entre 0,70-3 m. Os grãos podem ser consumidos quebrados ou cozidos como se faz com o arroz ou moídos, sendo a farinha usada em panificação.
