Planta da família Cyperacea, da espécie Cyperus sculentus (L.) Goyan.
Nota 2: Ele se propaga através de tubérculos ou de divisão de touceiras, eliminando-se as folhas. Produz bem em solos ricos em matéria orgânica que retenham bem a umidade, ou que estejam situados próximo aos cursos d’água. É consumido cru ou assado e seu sabor lembra o da castanha europeia.
