Planta da família Zingiberaceae, da espécie Alpinia purpurata K. Schum.
Nota 1 e 2: Ela é procedente da Ásia (Ilhas dos Mares do Sul). Ela é herbácea, rizomatosa, entouceirada, de 1,5 a 2 m de altura, com hastes numerosas, densas, semelhantes à cana-de-açúcar e folhas verde-escuras espessas. As inflorescências terminais são longas, com numerosas flores brancas pequenas, de brácteas em forma de barco, vermelhas, vistosas, que ocorrem durante o ano todo. São consideradas flores de corte. Multiplica-se por divisão de touceiras ou mudas, que surgem nas brácteas, após o florescimento.
