Palmeira da família Palmae, da espécie Elaeis melanococca Gaertn. (Alfonsia oleífera H.B.K.; Corozo oleifera (H.B.K.) Bailey).
Nota 1 e 2: Ela é tipicamente amazônica, de grande importância como fornecedora de óleo alimentar; O seu tronco é robusto e baixo, e chega ao máximo à altura de uma pessoa, e à medida que cresce, a parte mais velha se encurva, deixa de ser ereta e vai se horizontalizando e, em contato com o solo, emite raízes adventícias; Por este processo, a parte velha morre e entra em decomposição e desta maneira a planta vai se deslocando imperceptivelmente de sua localização original; O seu porte baixo é fator positivo na colheita dos cocos, característica que não acontece no dendê africano, cujo estipe alcança de 15-20 m de altura; Da polpa do coco obtém-se óleo avermelhado, que tem os mesmos empregos culinários que o dendê, ao passo que a amêndoa fornece óleo branco, aproveitado para a fabricação de margarina e outros fins.

Note 1 and 2: It is tipically from Amazônia, of great importance as supplier of edible oil. Its trunk is sturdy and short, and has a maximum reach of a person’s size, and, as it grows, the oldest part bends, stops being straight, and starts to be horizontal and, when in contact with the soil it starts to grow adventitious roots. With this process, the old part dies and starts to decompose, and the plant starts to move in a subtle way from its original location. Its small size is a positive factor in the harvest of the coconuts, a characteristic that doesn’t exist in the African dendê, which stem reaches 15-20 m of height. A red oil with the same proprieties of dendê can be obtained from the coconut’s pulp, while the almond has a white oil that is used for manufacturing of margarine and other things.
