Árvore da família Leguminosae, da espécie Hematoxylon campechianum L.
Nota 1 e 2: Ela é mexicana, da baía do Campeche e também da América Central (Honduras e Antilhas). Ela atinge 8-12 m de altura, possui ramos espinhosos; folhas alternas, penadas e persistentes; flores pequenas, amarelas, aromáticas, dispostas em racemos curtos e axilares, que se destacam das folhas. O fruto é uma vagem chata e lanceolada. Da madeira se obtém a hematina, uma matéria corante vermelha e brilhante, de uso corrente em tinturaria e em coloração artificial de vinhos.

Note 1 and 2: It is Mexican, from the Bay of Campeche and it is found in Central America (Honduras and Antilles). It reaches 8-12m of height; it has thorny branches; its leaves are alternate, persistent and with a feather shape. Its flowers are small, yellow, aromatic, disposed in short, and axillary racemes, which detach themselves from the leaves. The fruit is a flat and lanceolate pod. From its wood, it is possible to obtain a red and bright dye, usualy employed in dyeing activities and in wine colouring.
