Planta da família Dioscoreaceae, da espécie Dioscorea alata L., o cultivar mais importante o Brasil é o Florida.
Nota 2: Desenvolve-se em climas bem em climas tropicais, quentes, úmidos e nos solos areno-argilosos. O plantio é realizado de junho a setembro, e a colheita, de abril a novembro. A planta produz grande quantidade de tubérculos, os quais são muito usados em sopas, bolos, pães e também a alimentação animal; eles não são muito conserváveis e devem ser consumidos rapidamente após a colheita.

Note 2: It grows well in tropical, hot and humid climates, and in clayey-sandy soils. The planting occurs between June and September and the harvest, between April and November. The plant produces a large nunber of tubercles, which are used in soups, cakes, breads and in animal feeding; they do not endure very much, that is why they must be fastly consumed after their harvest.
