CARAGUATÁ-ACANGA
Planta herbácea da família Bromeliaceae, da espécie Bromelia pinguin L. (Agallostachys pinguin Beer; Ananas pinguin Gaert; Bromelia faustosa sensu Lindl.; Bromelia ignea Beer; Karatas pinguin Mill.).
Nota 1 e 2: Ele é nativo das Antilhas, do México, da América Central até Amazônia e Mato Grosso. Ele é acaule ou quase, é robusto e entouceirado. A planta é vivaz, com 100 ou mais folhas, dispostas em roseta de 1,5-2,5 m de diâmetro. As folhas são estreitas e espinhosas, e atingem 2 m de comprimento x 4 cm de largura, elas são verde-brilhantes, mas se tornam avermelhadas na maturidade. As flores são avermelhadas, pubescentes, e dispostas em densa panícula. Os frutos amadurecem entre março e maio, são do tamanho de uma ameixa e muito ácidos; quando cozidos dão um xarope reputado por combater tosses e bronquites; o fruto ainda pode ser matéria prima na fabricação de refrescos e sorvetes. A planta pode ser empregada como cerca-viva.

Note 1 and 2: It is native of the Antilles, of Mexico, and from Central America to Amazonia and Mato Grosso state. It is acaulescent or almost, it is tough and tussocky. The plant is vivacious, with a hundred leaves or more, which are disposed in rosette of 1.5-2.5 m of diameter. The leaves are narrow and thorny, reaching up to 2 m of length x 4 cm of width, they have a bright-green colouration, but they become reddish as they reach ripeness. The flowers are reddish, pubescent and disposed in a dense panicle. The fruits ripen between March and May, their size is similar to the one of a prune; they are very acid and, when cooked they provide a reputed syrop, which struggles coughs and bronchitis; furthermore, it can be used as raw material in the manufacture of ice creams and juices. The plant can also be used as a quickset.
