CARANDAÍ
Árvore da família Palmae, da espécie Trithrinax brasiliensis Mart. (Thrinax brasiliensis Mart.).
Nota 1 e 2: Ela ocorre no Sul da América do Sul, desde o Paraná até o Rio de Janeiro e Paraguai, ela habita terrenos pantanosos. Possui crescimento vagaroso, mal atinge 3-5 m; é resistente aos frios do inverno sulino. Possui espique simples, inteiramente vestido pela base das folhas, que forma no ápice do estipe uma cobertura de tramas de fibras e longos espinhos, com disposição espiralada, assemelhando-se a uma coroa de fortes e longos filamentos, que têm na extremidade, espinhos duros e ofensivos. As inflorescências são enormes, e tocam o chão com suas pontas; são múltiplas e espetaculosamente de brilhante coloração branco-creme, elas são protegidas por espatas alvas. As folhas em ventarolas possuem 1 m de diâmetro, são armadas de dois acúleos apicais e são utilizadas como leques, abanicos e vassouras. O fruto é uma baga globular espessa, verde-amarela, que tem 2 cm de diâmetro e não é comestível.

Note 1 and 2: It occurs in the south of South America, from the state of Paraná until the state of Rio de Janeiro and Paraguay; it dwells in swampy fields. Its growth is sluggish and it barely reaches 3-5 m, it is very resistant to the southern cold. It has a simple stalk, completely lined by the leaves basis, which forms,in the stipe apex, a simple coverage of plots of fibers and long thorns, with a spirally disposition, similar to a crown of strong and lengthy filaments that present, in their extremity, hard and offensive thorns. The inflorescences are huge and touch the soils with their tips; they are multiple and spectacularly of a shining white-cream colouration; they are protected by white spathe. The leaves, in fan-shape, have 1m of diameter and have 2 apical hooklets, they are used as fans and brooms. The fruit is a globular, thick and green-yellow berry, which has 2 cm of diameter and it is not edible.
