Planta da família Cactaceae, da espécie Ceresus hexagonus Mill. (C. peruvianus D.C.; Cactus hexagonus L., Cactus octognus Page).
Nota 1 e 2: Ela é originária do Brasil. Ramifica-se desde a base, tendo os artículos inferiores 4-6 arestas e os superiores 4-5 arestas; são onduladas ao longo dos bordos, pequenas, espaçadas de 2 cm, feltrosas, no mais das vezes inermes nos artículos jovens, mas armadas nos velhos de 8-10 espinhos ou mais, com 4-7 cm de comprimento. As flores são noturnas, olorosas, geralmente abundantes, 20-25 cm de comprimento; segmentos externos lanceolados, tintos de púrpura; os internos são mais delgados e brancos. Fruto ovóide, 5-12 cm de comprimento, vermelho-escuro, deprimido no ápice; polpa mole, sucosa, brancacenta e comestível.

Note 1 and 2: The inferior branches have 4-6 edges and the superior ones have 4-5, the edges are wavy alongside the borders, small, separated by 2 cm, lanuginous, commonly spineless in the young branches, but armed in the old ones, with 8-10 thorns or more, which one with 4-7 cm of length. The flowers are nocturnal, odorous, and usually abundant; the outer segments are lanceolate, with a purpure colouration, the inner ones are more slender and whitish. The fruit is ovoid, 5-12 cm of length, dark-red, depressed in the apex; the pulp is soft, juicy, whitish and edible.
