Carica é o gênero mais importante da família Caricaceae. Há muitas espécies frutíferas e a mais importante é C. papaya L.
Nota 1 e 2: São plantas nativas dos trópicos americanos de pequeno porte, de rápido crescimento, tronco a prumo, geralmente sem ramificações, seiva leitosa; folhas grandes, de longos pedúnculos, em ramalhetes no topo do tronco.

Note 1 and 2: The plants are native of the American tropics. They have a small size and they grow fast, they have an erect trunk, generally without ramification, and a milky sap; the leaves are big, with long peduncles, in bouquets on the top of the trunk.
