Árvore da família Leguminosae-Mimosoideae, da espécie Adenanthera pavonina L.
Nota 1 e 2: Ela é originaria da Índia e da Malásia, no Brasil, ela se encontra espalhada em todos os estados. Ela cresce lentamente e se adadpta a qualquer solo. Ela é inerme, de até 15 m de altura, glabra em todas as suas partes; folhas pecioladas, bipinadas,com até 50 cm de comprimento e compostas de 2-5 pares de penas opostas; folíolos curtopeciolados, alternos 11-21, ovados, muito obtusos, até 5 cm de comprimento e 25 mm de largura, membranosos; flores amarelo-pálidas, dispostas em racimos estreitos, longopedunculados, 10-18 axilares ou panículas no ápice dos ramos; fruto vagem estreita, curvado-falcada de 10-27 mm de comprimento e apenas 10-15 mm de largura, valvas castanhas por fora e amarelo-ouro por dentro, torcidas em espiral no momento da deiscência, intumescidas no lugar das sementes ; estas se apresentam comprimidas, coloridas de vermelho-vivo, com albúmen duro, quase córneo. Ela fornece madeira escura, castanho-avermelhada, pesada, compacta, de grande durabilidade e recebendo bem o verniz, própria para construção civil e marcenaria de luxo. As sementes podem ser aproveitadas para fabricação de artigos de adorno pessoal, ou comidas após cozimentos.

Note 1 and 2: It is native of India and Malaysia, in Brazil, it is broadly scattered in all the states of the country. It grows slowly and it adapts itself to many kinds of soils. It is inerm, reaching up to 15 m of height, it is glabrous in all its parts; the leaves are petiolated, bipinnate, with until 50 cm of length and compound of 2-5 pairs of penna, the leaflets are shorpetiolated, membranous, alternate 11-21, ovate and very obtuse, with until 5 cm of length and 25 mm of width. The flowers are yellow-pale, disposed in narrow racemes, longpedunculated, 10-18 axillary or panicles in the apex of the brances. The fruit is a narrow pod, curvated-falciform, with 10-27 mm of length and only 10-15 mm of width. The valves are externally brownish and internally gold-yellow, they are twisted in spiral at the moment of the dehiscence, they are tumid in the places where there are seeds, these ones are compreseed, they have a bright red colouration and a hard albumen (almost corneous). The tree provides a dark brownish-reddish wood, heavy, compact, with a long durability, it receives well the varnish and it is suitable for construction and luxury carpentry. The seeds can be used in the manufacturing of personal adornments, or they can be eated after cooking.
