Planta da família Rubiaceae, da espécie Genipa caruto H.B.K (G. americana var. caruto Schum.).
Nota 1 e 2: Ela é nativa da América Central, México e Argentina, ocorrendo nesses territórios e nas regiões entre as Antilhas e a Argentina. A casca é lisa e amarelada; as folhas são terminais, obovado-oblongas, opostas e muito velutíneas. As flores possuem cálice verde, cilíndrico, glabro e truncado no ápice; coloração amarelo-clara; anteras sésseis; ovário de cor creme aderido ao cálice; estigma amarelo e oblongo. Fruto globoso-elipsóide, com 10 cm de comprimento, cinzento por fora, polpa escassa e branca contendo numerosas sementes redondas; sabor medíocre. O fruto é alimentar (sem importância comercial) e, quando verde, fornece um corante azul usado na carpintaria; a casca e as folhas possuem um sabor adstringente.

Note 1 and 2: It is native to Central America, Mexico and Argentina, occurring in these territories in the region between the Antilles and Argentina. The bark is smooth and yellowish; the flowers are terminal, oblong-ovate, opposite and very velvety. The flowers have a green, cylindrical and glabrous calyx, which is truncated in the apex; they have a light-yellow colouration and sessile anthers. The ovary (cream colouration) is adhered to the calyx and has an ablong and yellow stigma. The fruit is globose-ellipsoid, externally greyish and with10 cm of length. The pulp is white and scarce, with numerous rounded seeds and a mediocre flavour. The green fruits provide a blue dye, which is used in carpentry; the bark and the leaves have an astringent taste.
