CASTANHA-CAIATÉ
Trepadeira da família Euphorbiaceae, da espécie Omphalea diandra L. (Hebecocca panamensis Beurl; Omphalandria driandria Kuntze; Omphalea cordata Swartz; O. guinanensis Klotzsch).
Nota 1 e 2: Ela ocorre das matas úmidas das Antilhas à Amazônia brasileiro-guianense. Possui um fruto amarelo e esférico, com 10-14 cm de diâmetro, que cai quando maduro e se separa em 3-4 partes; o fruto abriga uma semente parda, dura, que possui uma amendoa envolta em substancia branca, cremosa e comestível. As amêndoas são comestíveis e oleaginosas.

Note 1 and 2: It occurs from the humid forests of the Antilles to Brazilian-Guyanese Amazonia. It has a yellow and spherical fruit, with 10-14 cm of diameter; when ripe, it fells and separates itself in 3-4 parts; the fruit shelters a brown and thick seed, which possesses an almond surrounded by a white substance, creamy and edible. The almonds are edible and oleaginous.
