CASTANHA-EUROPEIA
Árvore da família Fagaceae, da espécie Castanea sativa Mill. (C. vesca Gaertn.; C. castanea Karst.; C. vulgaris Lam.).
Nota 1 e 2: Ela é nativa da região mediterrânica; espontânea na África do Norte, atingindo seu melhor desenvolvimento no sul da Itália, na França, na Espanha, nas Ilhas do Mediterrâneo e na Ásia Menor. Foi introduzida no Brasil no século XIX, porém não possui valor econômico.Ela atinge até 25 m de altura; possui folhas oblongo-lanceoladas, caducas, nervuras salientes, quase paralelas, denticuladas em serra. Flores masculinas reunidas em amentos lineares, compridos, em grupo de 7 na extremidade dos brotos ou na axila das folhas terminais; as flores femininas se formam na axila das folhas ou na base dos amentos masculinos, contidas em número de 3 em uma cúpula comum que, depois da fecundação, cresce e se converte no ouriço das castanhas. As castanhas caem quando maduras e perdem o poder germinativo em alguns meses.

Note 1 and 2: It is native to the Mediterranean region; spontaneous in the Northern Africa, reaching its best development in the South of Italy, in France, in Spain, in the Mediterranean Islands and in Asia Minor. It was introduced in Brasil in 19th century, but it does not have any economic value. It reaches up to 25 m of height; its leaves are oblong-lanceolate, deciduous, protruding ribs, almost parallel, denticulated in saw. The masculine flowers are gathered in linear and lengthy catkins, in groups of 7 in the extremity of the buds or in the axilla of the terminal leaves. The feminine flowers are found in the axilla of the or in the basis of the masculine catkins, contained in 3 in a common cupola, which, after the fertilization, grows and becomes the ‘’urchin’’ of the chestnut. The chestnuts fall when ripe but they lose their germinative power after some months.
