Objective
Empower students with the understanding of the physiological and biochemical aspects involved in the life cycle of phytopathogenic fungi.
Content
Lectures – basics of fungal taxonomy; cellular components and chemical composition; primary metabolism, secondary metabolism; regulation of metabolism; vegetative growth and reproduction (sporulation); spore germination and dormancy; nutritional and physical requirements; nutrients: digestion and transport; fungi as plant parasites; fungicides and fungal physiology. Lab classes – basics of taxonomy and morphology; sterilization and growth media; subculturing and maintenance of fungi; production of exoenzymes; influence of auto-inhibitors on germination of spores; influence of carbon sources, nitrogen and vitamins on growth; influence of temperature and light on growth; production of antibiotics; antibiosis.
