Objective
Provide primarily master's students, through theoretical/practical classes, a comprehensive view of the
leading groups of causal agents of plant diseases with an emphasis on biological aspects relevant to the
understanding the disease process and its control.

Content
Classification systems for living beings. The Bacteria Domain and its phytopathogenic agents: general characteristics, classification and symptoms of the primary diseases. Basic methods in bacteriology. Fungi as agents causing diseases. Fungi from the Kingdoms Stramenopila and Protozoa. True fungi: ascomycetes, basidiomycetes, zygomycetes, and anamorphic fungi. Virus: nature of the viral particle. Virus taxonomy. Disease symptoms caused by viruses. Basic methods in virology. Nematodes: biology, morphology and classification. Main genera of Phytonematodes and diseases they cause. Basic methods in phytonematology. Other disease-causing agents. Abiotic diseases.
